S21.83: Open wound (any part of the thorax) associated with intrathoracic injury

You have an injury to your esophagus.

You have an open wound on your chest. The wound is so deep that one or more organs in your chest are also injured. An injury like this occurs, for example, as a result of an accident or a violent blow to the chest.

The esophagus or gullet connects the mouth with the stomach. It is a muscular tube. The muscles in the esophagus move food into the stomach.

Damage to the gullet is usually accompanied by pain. You may also vomit blood.
