Die meisten Wirbel bestehen jeweils aus einem Wirbelkörper und einem Wirbelbogen. Der Wirbelkörper trägt die Last des Körpers. Die Wirbelbögen liegen übereinander und bilden dadurch den Wirbelkanal. Im Wirbelkanal liegt das Rückenmark. Außen auf dem Gehirn und dem Rückenmark liegen 3 dünne Hirnhäute. Ganz außen liegt eine harte Haut. Darunter liegen 2 weiche Häute. Das erkrankte Gewebe befand sich am Knochen oder an den Hirnhäuten.
