ICD-Code I31.80: Cardiac tamponade

Your heart is severely constricted and can thus no longer work properly.

The pericardium is a layer of connective tissue surrounding the heart. There is some fluid in the pericardium (heart sac). So the heart is able to move inside this lining. If additional fluid accumulates in the pericardium, the heart becomes constricted. Rarely, an accumulation of air in the pericardium can also cause this, for example if the lung has been injured. The heart can then no longer work properly. This may make you very weak and breathless. Your heart may beat very rapidly. It may no longer be possible for all areas of the body to receive sufficient blood supply.

Additional indicator

  • G: Confirmed diagnosis
  • V: Tentative diagnosis
  • Z: Condition after
  • A: Excluded diagnosis
  • L: Left
  • R: Right
  • B: Both sides
